where bond and blog unite
my thoughts on all things Bond
One of the things that makes bond what it is, is the music. The deep hum of brass, that iconic guitar, to more modern, electronic pieces. All of it works (I'll admit there was one suspect piece- lets not mention Madonna's die another day again.) I love the Bond themes and the soundtracks however there are a few that stick out. Skyfall is one of my favourites, the relaxing brassier tones hark back to classic bond and i find the whole affair very comforting. My favourite, unsurprisingly, is Casino Royale. You're probably all bored of hearing me express my never-ending love for this film, however, like the film the Score is stunning.
The music for me, is a little less traditional, however you can definitely hear bond in there. Firstly the score reflects the Bahamian setting of the first part of the film. It has a tropical and romantic feel which takes you away from the real world. pieces like 'Solange' and 'Trip Aces' really reflect this theme for me. Also, listen to the remastered James Bond Theme and catch the bongos in the background, for me these really give that paradise island feel to the film.
Casino Royale is said to be one of the most romantic Bond scores and i completely agree. I think the story of the book allowed the film to have such a romantic score. The relationship between Vesper and Bond is something we've never seen visually as a bond audience before. Being the story which introduces Bond as a rough, unrefined agent who falls deeply in love, you have to have a score which reflects this. The score for me is unique compared to other Bond films, however i think Casino Royale is unique. The story is thrilling, exotic and romantic, all which the score displays.
Vespers importance to the story is also reflected in the film. Accents of the piece 'Vesper' is injected into many areas of the score, which really reflects her importance as a character. Very rarely does music make me cry, however when watching the scene 'Death of Vesper' I well up. The music here is so breathtaking but heart wrenching at the same time , so harsh and then so soft. For me i see every aspect of their relationship in this piece. As well as this, the following piece 'The bitch is dead' and a slightly earlier piece 'City of lovers' really brings me back to certain moments in the film. If i'm honest most of the romantic pieces take me back to the film and the feeling i felt when i watched certain scenes. By bringing you back to certain points, it also brings back the emotion, something very special in this film.
I hope you enjoyed this post and i would love to know your thoughts on the score so leave them down in the comments.
